Introduction and Personal Statement

I am a Rwandan currently studying in Canada at Thompson Rivers University, working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and New Media. Throughout my four-year experience, I have particularly enjoyed the hands-on approach in my third and fourth years. These years were the most impactful, allowing me to gain significant skills from working on a documentary in Richard Amante’s class and through my internship on the Salmon Arm project to my internship, were I acquired a number of skills ranging from editing to proper animating. Initially, I never imagined myself animating, but I took a leap of faith, believing that watching animations would be as exciting as creating them. I soon realized the complexity involved, but with guidance from Colleen and the incredible faculty, I managed to learn and grow immensely. My journey has been shaped by these experiences and the support from my mentors, making me eager to embrace future opportunities in the field of communications and new media.

During my internship on the Salmon Arm project, I had to quickly learn animation skills to meet the client’s needs. I mastered Adobe Animate within the span of two months, ensuring that the project was delivered on time and according to standards. This experience taught me the importance of adaptability and fast learning in a professional setting. My role as a Sales Associate at Zumiez Canada provided me with extensive experience in financial reporting. I was responsible for end-of-day and start-of-day operations, as well as inventory reporting. Over nearly three years, I encountered various types of reports, allowing me to analyze them and adjust my sales techniques to meet daily goals. This experience improved my ability to interpret data and make informed decisions. Additionally, being part of a generation immersed in technology, I developed proficiency in various computer software applications. My knowledge extends from Java classes to practical experience with Microsoft Office, presentation software, and design tools. This technical skill enhances my ability to tackle a wide range of tasks efficiently.

Looking ahead, after graduation, I plan to find a job for a period of 1-2 years while I pursue a Google Certification in Cyber Security. Given the importance of cybersecurity in our generation, I believe that combining this certification with my degree will be invaluable. Through my coursework in crisis communication and crime and media, I have gained various theories and strategies that will aid me in excelling in this field. Equipped with my degree and certification, I feel confident that I will be the full package, ready to thrive in any professional setting.

At Thompson Rivers University, I have developed essential skills and understanding through a combination of coursework and practical experience. One of the key learning outcomes has been communication, the ability to articulate my needs and wants effectively in various settings . This has enhanced my communication skills, allowing me to connect with others and convey my thoughts clearly and confidently. Teamwork has been another vital component of my education. Through group projects and presentations, I have learned how to collaborate efficiently with peers, valuing each member’s contributions and working towards common goals. These experiences have not only improved my ability to work in teams but also taught me the importance of listening and adapting to different perspectives. Engagement in lifelong learning has been a cornerstone of my education. The skills I have acquired, from technical proficiencies to critical thinking, have equipped me for continuous personal and professional growth. Additionally, courses in sociology have provided me with a deeper understanding of social issues and the ethical responsibilities we have as individuals. These courses were particularly inspirational, highlighting the importance of social responsibility and offering ways to address and handle these issues ethically.
